Interest on unused margin in a trading account involves the accrual of interest on funds that are not currently invested in financial instruments but that are in the account. These funds can be used for future transactions. OANDA Corporation offers interest on unused margin rate on these funds. This allows traders to benefit from unused funds before deciding to use them on trades.
For the interest to be accrued, you must have free funds in your account exceeding the minimum values specified by OANDA. The minimum values for average daily unused margins fall into two categories: $10,000–$49,999, which will earn you a 2% APY, and $50,000+**, which will earn you 3% APY.
**Interest will only be paid to US citizens, US-based corporations, or US-based legal entities. Clients must have placed a live trade in their account within the last six months (180 days) to be eligible for interest on unused margins.

To ensure you qualify for interest on margin that’s unused, the minimum daily value of free funds must be exceeded on the given day for which interest is accrued. If you don’t meet the eligibility criteria on any given day, no interest will be accrued for that day.
The minimum value of unused margins for interest accrual is determined based on the value of the free funds at 5:00 PM Eastern Time for every weekday in a given calendar
month and averaging it over the number of such weekdays.
You’ll receive the accumulated monthly interest on the 10th day of the following calendar month.
The interest on unused margin is calculated according to the following formula: (Free Funds x Interest Rate)/365.
The maximum credit that may be credited to your OANDA account for a given calendar month shall be $200,000.
