Volatility Chart
Volatility is the "heartbeat" of the market. This tool identifies which instruments are experiencing the most movement, helping you choose assets that match your trading style, whether you prefer higher price fluctuations and breakouts or stabler, range-bound markets.
The Volatility Chart provides three data modes (daily, hourly and weekly) for historical volatility, shown by the difference between the lowest and highest mid-prices for each instrument, shown in pips. Our calculations use daily session breaks based on the New York market close (5:00 PM ET). Weekend non-trading hours are excluded from volatility calculations.
Three ways to analyze volatility:
- Hourly Mode: See the average pip range for every hour of the day (based on the last 5 or 10 days). Use this to identify "Peak Volatility" hours, such as the London/New York overlap.
- Daily Mode: View the total pip range per trading day over a 1 or 3-month period to identify long-term shifts in market activity.
- Weekly Mode: Compare the average daily movement across different days of the week (based on the last 5 or 10 weeks) to see which days are historically the most active.
Data sources: Proprietary OANDA mid-market pricing. Volatility measurements are calculated using the high and low ranges of completed hourly and daily closing mid-prices.
