A practical guide to tailoring your MT4 toolbar by adding or removing functions for a cleaner and more efficient trading setup.
Customising the MT4 toolbar
In MT4, commonly used features are placed on the toolbar by default. However, this toolbar can be freely customised to better suit your individual trading style. The default toolbar includes both frequently used tools and ones you may never need. Displaying only the functions you regularly use reduces unnecessary clicks so you can work more efficiently.
Adding and removing toolbar items in MT4
The MT4 toolbar is broadly divided into four sections: A, B, C, and D. You can customise each section by adding or removing items as needed.
To begin, right-click on the relevant toolbar section and select “Customise”. This will open the “Customizing toolbar” window. Here, you can manage the items displayed on the toolbar. To add a function, select it from the “Available” list on the left and click the “Insert” button. It will move to the “Selected” list and appear on the toolbar.
To remove a function, choose it from the “Selected” list and click the “Remove” button. It will be moved back to the “Available” list and disappear from the toolbar.
This example shows the chart timeframe section being customised. If you seldom use certain timeframes—such as 1-minute, 30-minute, or monthly—you can remove them from the toolbar by transferring them to the “Available” list, as shown. Similarly, if you do not use automated trading, you can hide any related buttons.
Removing unused tools gives you a cleaner, more user-friendly workspace.
Take full advantage of this customisation feature to create a toolbar that suits your trading preferences.
