A practical guide to customising the colours of your MT4 charts for better visibility and a more personalised trading experience.
Customising chart colours in MT4 (MetaTrader 4)
One of the most attractive features of MT4 is the high degree of customisation it offers.
This functionality extends not only to analytical tools but also to the choice of chart colours, which can be tailored to suit your preferences.
Chart colour settings
To customise chart colours in MT4, right-click anywhere on the chart and select “Properties”.
This will open the colour settings window.
In this window, you can adjust different aspects of the chart’s appearance to suit your visual preferences and trading environment.
The following elements can be customised:
- Background: The background colour of the chart
- Foreground: The colour of elements such as the vertical and horizontal axes, price levels, and the currency pair displayed at the top
- Grid: The colour of the dotted vertical and horizontal lines
- Bar Up: The colour of up bars in a bar chart or the outline (wick and border) of bullish candlesticks
- Bar Down: The colour of down bars in a bar chart or the outline (wick and border) of bearish candlesticks
- Bull candle: The fill colour of a bullish (rising) candlestick
- Bear candle: The fill colour of a bearish (falling) candlestick
- Line graph: The colour of the line in line charts
- Volumes: The colour of volume bars (in FX, this represents tick volume)
- Ask line: The colour of the ask price line when displayed on the chart
- Stop levels: The colour of the lines indicating stop orders
If none of the default colours suit your needs, you can create your own custom colours.
To do this, select “Custom” from the colour menu to open the colour configuration window.
In the configuration window, use the colour box on the right to choose your preferred shade, adjust its brightness or depth, and click “Add to Custom Colors” to save it.
