Frequently asked questions
Earnings season, or simply ‘earnings’, is the period when most publicly traded companies release quarterly financial reports. Typically lasting around six weeks, these reports offer a detailed look into a company’s health, including revenues, expenses, and importantly, outlook for the future.
While each company will report throughout the year based on their specific fiscal cycles, the majority follow the calendar year, bar a few “off-cycle” reporters. Typically, this means that each of the four earnings seasons kicks off about two weeks after a quarter ends.
While much of market noise is based on speculation, earnings season offers a reality check to true company performance, helping investors stay informed on both recent company performance and future outlook.

A CFD, or contract for difference, is a type of financial derivative that allows you to speculate on price movements without owning the underlying asset. In the case of shares, this is speculating on the share price of an individual company, opting to either place a long, or short position.
Spread betting allows you to speculate on price movements across global markets, but you don’t own the underlying asset.
With our spread betting sub-account, you can go long or short on a wide range of global instruments. This means that if you believe the price of an instrument (for example, the UK 100 or US Wall St 30) will rise, you’d go long or buy the instrument. If you believe the price of the instrument is likely to fall, you may sell or take a short position. If you were right, you could make a profit, otherwise you’d make a loss (please note, the price must move beyond the spread amount for you to break even and begin making a profit).
Our spread betting accounts are designed to support both new and experienced traders. We provide a choice of platforms, alongside advanced tools to ensure an optimal trading environment, regardless of your level of expertise.
*All profits made in spread betting are exempt from UK Capital Gains Tax and UK stamp duty. UK and Irish tax laws are subject to change and individual circumstances may vary.
Both CFDs and spread betting are similar in that they’re both leveraged derivatives, and neither expire. In the UK, CFDs are currently exempt from stamp duty but subject to Capital Gains Tax (CGT). Spread betting is currently exempt from both stamp duty and CGT.
