Database Administrator (Contract), Toronto

Who You Are: You will be responsible for the security and integrity of our database systems.  On many occasions, this will require you to work independently on maintenance and planned activities.  However, you will also need to work well as part of a team for larger migrations, integration, and planning activities. You are a problem solver.  You are available to be a part of an on-call production rotation to assist our technical operations teams.  You can help us to resolve production issues when they arise.  You will also be involved in the planning processes, to help prevent outages in the future. You will also act as an advisor to our developers about SQL and table design best practices.  This can be from both a logical, and performance point of view.

Responsibilities and Duties include: 

  • Responsible for the upkeep of the database schema and contents (including data, contents, user permissions)
  • On-call on the weekend to support any emergencies 
  • Installation and optimization of database servers and clients for new software installations
  • Performance tuning of the current production databases
  • Work with developers to assist in the creation and optimization of new queries and functionality
  • Work with operations and IT to help resolve critical system outages
  • Provide around the clock database support to help resolve database issues
  • Develop and implement procedures that will ensure the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of data stored in the database.
  • Develop and implement security procedures for the database, including access and user account management.
  • Identify requirements for improvements to existing databases by determining users' information requirements and system performance and functional requirements
  • Control and coordinate changes to the database
  • Perform and/or coordinate updates to the database design
  • Manage short and long term maintenance updates
  • Assist in hardware capacity planning for future growth
  • Maintain developer database resources for development and testing
  • Plan and test for long term data security (Disaster Recovery and access control)
  • Manage database backup and restore processes
  • Develop custom diagnostic tools
  • Assist business with business requirements and one off data requests
  • Involved in risk assessment for system changes

Qualifications

  • Experience with at least Db2 10.1, with 10.5 and 11.1 being preferable. 
  • Knowledge of HADR
  • Knowledgeable of Cassandra and other NoSQL databases
  • A university degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field
  • 5 years of experience administrating Db2 systems
  • Knowledgeable in Linux (or other UNIX) administration
  • In-depth knowledge of SQL development and troubleshooting 
  • Desirable Qualifications
  • Must work well independently
  • Available to work irregular hours during maintenance or times of crisis 
  • Experienced in shell scripting and some application development
